Empowering Villages Along the Soum-son Trail, Laos
What is this project about?
In northern Laos, a new chapter of responsible community-based tourism is taking shape along the Soum-son Trail. Supported by Khiri Reach, Camino Women, and Leatherback Travel, this initiative is helping villagers in remote areas of Luang Prabang develop the skills to welcome travelers into their communities.
A total of 30 villagers participated in training sessions covering homestay management, food safety, customer service, and sustainable tourism practices. These workshops aim to prepare the communities to host visitors in a way that enhances local livelihoods while protecting the environment and cultural traditions.
The first four-day trek along the Soum-son Trail is set to take place in February 2025, welcoming six Australian women as part of a broader Laos journey. Future plans include hosting regular trekking groups, generating consistent income for the villages, and preserving traditional lifestyles across three ethnic communities.
Why we support this project
At Khiri Reach, we believe in creating opportunities that empower communities sustainably. This project aligns perfectly with our mission to support local development without fostering dependency on tourism alone.
By funding training in key hospitality skills, we’re helping villagers build confidence, share their culture proudly, and ensure that travelers enjoy authentic, meaningful experiences. The program also encourages two-way cultural exchange, where both villagers and guests learn from each other—fostering mutual understanding and respect.
In addition to financial and training support, Khiri Reach provided laptops, books, and preserved foods, further strengthening local resources and helping communities adapt to future opportunities.
Project milestones
In December 2024, 26 villagers from Ban Houy Tan and Ban Na (Chomphet District, Luang Prabang Province) completed a three-day training program led by the Institute of Mass Media, Culture and Tourism. Their dedication marks an inspiring step forward in shaping a more inclusive and resilient tourism model for northern Laos.
Together with our partners, Khiri Reach is proud to walk alongside these communities—helping them build brighter futures through responsible travel.
